Losing your erection when you put on a condom?

It is one of the most common worries young and older men have, and one of the least talked about. George Mulaudzi, Naturopath helps you understand why it happens and what you can do, so protection stops getting in the way of a good sex life.

You are aroused, everything is going well, and then the moment comes to put the condom on and your erection fades. It can be frustrating and embarrassing, and after it happens a few times many men start to dread that moment, which makes it more likely to happen again.

Studies of young men show condom-related erection loss is common, and there is usually a clear, workable reason behind it. Losing an erection during foreplay.

Why it happens

The pause breaks arousal

Stopping to find, open and roll on a condom takes focus away from touch and closeness, and arousal drops.

Worry takes over

Once you expect it to happen, the stress response kicks in and works against the erection. Performance anxiety.

Poor fit or less sensation

A condom that is too tight, too loose or too thick can reduce feeling and comfort.

Erections that are already a bit softer

If erections are less firm than before, the extra moment of lost stimulation is enough to tip them over. Weak erections.

Practical things that help

  • Practise putting a condom on alone, so it becomes quick and automatic.
  • Try different sizes, shapes and thinner brands until one feels comfortable.
  • Keep the stimulation going, or let your partner put the condom on as part of foreplay.
  • A small drop of water-based lubricant inside the tip can increase sensation; use plenty on the outside too.
  • Go easy on alcohol, which dulls arousal and makes erections less reliable.
  • Never skip protection to avoid the problem; work on the cause instead.

When to book a consultation

If it happens most times, if erections are softer in other situations too, or if worry about it is starting to affect your relationships, a private consultation is a good next step. You can also take our one-minute erection health check first.

Questions about condoms and erections

Why do I lose my erection when I put on a condom?

Usually because the pause interrupts arousal, worry about losing the erection takes over, the condom fits poorly or reduces sensation, or erections are a little less firm than they used to be. Often it is a mix of these.

Does condom size really matter?

Yes. A condom that is too tight can feel uncomfortable and restrict sensation, and one that is too loose can slip and reduce feeling. Trying a few sizes and brands, including thinner options, often helps.

Should I just stop using condoms?

No. Condoms protect you and your partner from sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy. The better approach is to work out why your erection fades and fix that.

Is it a sign of erectile dysfunction?

Not necessarily. If it only happens with condoms, it is often about arousal, sensation or nerves. If erections are also softer at other times, or this is happening more often, a consultation can look at the wider picture.

Can a consultation help with this?

Yes. George looks at confidence, stress, sleep, circulation and erection quality together, and gives you practical steps plus a natural plan that fits your life.
